Old Midleton Distillery – The Legacy of the Last Drops

If you take pride in the whiskey you own and enjoy, then you know Old Midleton Distillery. First opened in 1825, Old Midleton Distillery was one of the largest distilleries in Ireland boasting three pot stills, one of which still stands high beyond its closed doors. This copper pot still, one of the seven wonders of the whiskey world is the largest pot still that exists, holding 143,000 litres—a giant that whispered magic into the spirits that came from this iconic place.

Here in Old Midleton Distillery, traditions were born, passion was ignited, and the remnants of its impact live on in Midleton Distillery today, where everyone who works tirelessly on its whiskey are taught and guided using the traditions that stem from this iconic place. With distilling dating back to the 19th century, Old Midleton’s renowned bounty has been said to have drawn whiskey into being. Now each release and everyone who works within Midleton Distillery today is part of that rare legacy.

An Icon of Whiskey Making Legacy

For 150 years, Old Midleton Distillery crafted whiskey that set the standard for generations to come before, in 1975, Old Midelton Distillery fell silent—the heartbeat of Irish whiskey would never create another release. Then, in 2020 the Silent Distillery Collection reignited the spirit of the revered home of Irish Whiskey, and through five releases, whiskey connoisseurs, lovers and appreciators have had a chance to indulge in the whiskey-making speciality that made Old Midleton Distillery so iconic. So far, five chapters of the Silent Distillery Collection have been introduced, sold and savoured, and now we are proud to share our sixth and final chapter—the final drops.

Since 2020, the Silent Distillery Collection celebrates as well as elevates all the complexities, virtues and handcrafted qualities of a classic Single Pot Still whiskey. Not only that, it is also a fitting tribute to Max Crockett, Master Distiller and forefather of a truly iconic Irish whiskey.

The Influence of Max Crockett

Old Midleton Distillery was a place shaped by people as much as spirit. One of the most influential was Max Crockett, Master Distiller and the man responsible for many of the whiskeys that would later become part of the Silent Distillery Collection. His dedication to craft and quiet pursuit of excellence left a lasting mark.

It was under Max’s guidance that his son, Barry Crockett, began his own journey. As a young man, Barry started by checking the quality of barley delivered by local farmers—only the best made it through his careful inspection. From there, he learned the deeper skills of distillation from his father, gradually taking on more responsibility. Over the years, Barry brought together the finest ingredients, modern techniques, and a skilled team to create what he would describe as an orchestra in perfect harmony.

The Final Drops of the Old Midleton Distillery

The influence of the Old Midleton distillery shaped Barry Crockett’s philosophy: tradition, balance, and the pursuit of excellence. In time, he became Master Distiller himself, and in 1984, he created Midleton Very Rarea whiskey that reflected his vision of harmony between craft and innovation. Years later, the casks distilled during his father’s tenure and nurtured under Barry’s care would become the foundation of the Silent Distillery Collection, the final drops of which we are sharing with you now. In many ways, the Silent Distillery Collection is a continuation of the legacy passed from father to son—rare whiskeys brought to life through patience, precision, and a profound connection to the place that started their legacy, the legacy that these final drops symbolise.
