Midleton Very Rare 2020

Heralding the 37th edition of our world renowned vintage release, Brian Nation – in his final days as Master Distiller, continued the long-standing tradition of hand-selecting whiskeys reserved for this coveted annual expression from Midleton Distillery’s supreme inventory for the last time.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Initial top notes of cane sugar and vanilla intertwined with pepper and nutmeg spices, complimented by sweet orchard fruits and white chocolate fudge all layered over polished antique wood notes, showcasing an intriguing balance between spirit and wood thanks to the complex interaction from the many years spent in the finest oak casks.
Taste: Initial burst of tangy fruit sweetness of orange peel and sweet pear creating a succulent texture while the pot still spices build overtime adding a mild prickle of chilli oil. The presence of the charred oak remains constant in the background adding balance to the fruits and spices.
Finish: Satisfyingly long finish with the fruits slowly fading, allowing the oak and spices to linger until the very end.

Midleton Very Rare 27 Year Old Single Cask

As is the age-old tradition of crafting Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey in Midleton, this whiskey has been distilled in large copper pot stills from a mash of both Malted and Unmalted Irish Barley. In creating this edition of Midleton Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey, one refill bourbon barrel was hand selected by the Master Distiller Brian Nation. The whiskey was filtered to remove wood char prior to being bottled at cask strength and no chill filtration was used. This whiskey was distilled, matured and bottled by the Midleton Distillery. An exquisite whiskey nurtured by craft. This single cask #8575 was laid down in 1992, there were only 156 bottles produced.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Initial aromas of delicate sweet citrus fruit notes along with pears and melons. Deep and rich spices of nutmeg and black peppercorns continue to build with old antique wood notes in the background that have developed from the many years of maturation yet still remaining in balance with the pot still spices.
Taste: Silk-like mouthcoating texture showcasing the vibrant fruit character while the pot still spices grow overtime adding a complex intensity while the toasted oak lingering in the background contributes a hint of vanilla sweetness and subtle tannins.
Finish: Rich and lingering with the spices continuing to build overtime while the toasted oak and fruit character gently subside.

Midleton Very Rare Dair Ghaelach Knockrath Forest

This Single Pot Still Irish whiskey was matured initially in American Oak Bourbon barrels and finished in virgin native Irish Oak Hogshead casks grown on the Knockrath Estate. The native Irish oak has interacted with the maturing whiskey to impart a complex medley of fruits and delicate spices. This special whiskey is the true and unique flavour of Ireland. Its provenance as individual as its fragrance, its journey from grain to glass as distinguished as its finish, this is a whiskey like no other. In fact the Brabazon family have watched over the forests here since the sixteenth century, and continue to manage the trees from one season to the next. Sustainably managing oak woods in this way over the centuries has meant that Knockrath estate became one of the first sites where the iconic Great Spotted Woodpecker set up residence on its recent return to Ireland, following years in exile.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Pot still spices are accentuated by the Irish oak contribution, adding waves of toasted wood with hints of vanilla and roasted coffee, layered over fresh fruit which evolves from orchard fruits to tropical notes.
Taste: Classic pot still spices give a luscious texture to the fore, while the influence of the Irish oak adds a medley of sweet notes including chocolate and honeycomb
Finish: Remarkably long finish with fruit and spices fading to allow the Irish Oak have the final say.

Midleton 1973 – Master Distillers Private Collection

In 1973, Max Crockett Master Distiller of the Old Midleton Distillery selected a number of his finest whiskey casks to form part of his private collection. The whiskey was released in 2003 by his son Barry Crockett who was the then Master Distiller at the New Midleton Distillery. 30 years of aging in three casks types imparted the essential hallmark of a very old whiskey – complexity and fullness of taste. This particular complexity comes from the marriage of pot still whiskeys aged in bourbon barrels, sherry butts and port pipes.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Rich Iberian stone fruits topped with sweet heathered honey, lead to the spicier pot still notes and a touch of old leather.
Taste: The distinctive and unique character of Old Midleton Pot Still is unmistakeable in this venerable old Irish Whiskey. Extremely oily with layers of spices, rich ripe fruit, heather honey and sweet butterscotch toffee. This evolves overtime to reveal the rich tannins and wood spices that all come together to create this wonderfully full bodied and flavoursome whiskey.
Finish: The rich old Midleton pot still lingers rounded with the wood spices that seem to last forever.

Midleton Very Rare 20^th Anniversary

This special whiskey was released in 2004 to celebrate the 20^th anniversary of the launch of Midleton Very Rare in 1984. Bottled at a cask strength of 53%, this whiskey is a blend of 5 of the finest of old grain and pot still whiskeys which have been matured in the finest bourbon casks for between 27 and 31 years. These casks yielded only 400 bottles at cask strength after decades of maturation. Each bottle comes with two beautifully hand cut Waterford Crystal glasses.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Lush floral grain notes are apparent at the onset, followed by a distinctly sweet aroma of candied tropical fruit enveloped by treacle toffee and coconut.
Taste: An initial burst of pot still spices arrive in tandem with waves of tropical fruits, creamy toffee fudge, and candied fruit peel. After the initial fruity spicy impact, the subtler floral bouquet notes become more apparent, showcasing the skills of the Master Distiller.
Finish: Silky and velvety, the finish belies the whiskeys cask strength.

Midleton Barry Crockett Legacy

This pinnacle of the Single Pot Still range, Midleton Barry Crockett Legacy, marked the first time since John Jameson that an Irish Distillers whiskey had been named after a Master Distiller. Single Pot Still whiskey is unique to Ireland in general and to the Midleton Distillery, Co. Cork, in particular, and is regarded as the quintessential style of Irish whiskey. Made from a mash of malted and unmalted barley and then triple distilled in traditional copper pot stills, Pot Still whiskeys are characterised by full, complex flavours and a wonderful, creamy mouthfeel.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Elegant aroma of vanilla and toasted oak complimented by a touch of lime, succulent green berries, pears and green sweet pepper.
Taste: Light pepper carries onto fresh citrus, limes and mandarin orange sweetness. A hint of cinnamon with vanilla and oak reveals its years spent in American oak.
Finish: The full spectrum of flavours lasts well into the finish, slowly fading to expose the clean American oak foundation.
